Canadian immigration uses the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB), and several tests convert to CLB. Here's how to choose.
1. The accepted tests
For English, IRCC accepts approved tests including IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General and PTE Core. Check IRCC's current list before booking.
2. What is CLB?
CLB is the scale used to compare your results. For example, IELTS General 6.0 in Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking is roughly CLB 7, a common minimum for many programmes.
3. IELTS General
Widely available with a human speaking examiner. Familiar format for many candidates.
4. CELPIP-General
A fully computer-based test designed around Canadian English and everyday situations.
5. PTE Core
Computer-based and marked automatically. It's the newer option for Canadian immigration.
The bottom line
Pick the test where your practice scores are highest and where you can reach your CLB target in every skill.
Test rules and score requirements change. Always confirm current details with the official test provider or immigration authority.
