Most IELTS candidates plateau at Band 6 not because their English is weak, but because their essays are unstructured, under-supported, or off-topic. The gap between a 6 and an 8 is rarely vocabulary — it's discipline. Here are seven strategies our tutors drill into every student preparing for Writing Task 2.
1. Spend two minutes decoding the question before you write a word
Underline the topic, the instruction words ("discuss," "to what extent," "advantages and disadvantages"), and every part of a multi-part question. A well-written essay that answers only half the prompt is capped well below Band 7 for Task Response. Rewrite the question in your own words as your working thesis before you plan a single paragraph.
2. Plan for four minutes, every time
A rushed essay reads like one. Sketch your position, your two main body ideas, and one supporting example for each before you start writing. This costs four minutes and saves you from the far more common failure: realizing at paragraph three that you've contradicted your own thesis.
3. Use a fixed four-paragraph skeleton
Introduction (paraphrase + clear thesis), Body 1 (one idea, fully developed), Body 2 (one idea, fully developed), Conclusion (restate + summarize, no new ideas). Examiners reward clarity of structure — a predictable skeleton frees up your attention for language and ideas instead of organization.
4. State your position in the introduction, not the conclusion
For opinion-style prompts, the examiner should know exactly where you stand by the end of your first paragraph. Essays that "build up" to a position across four paragraphs read as unclear rather than sophisticated, and cost marks on Task Response.
5. One topic sentence, one idea, per body paragraph
The most common Band 6 pattern is a body paragraph that drifts across two or three loosely related points. Pick one idea per paragraph, state it as your topic sentence, then spend the rest of the paragraph explaining and supporting only that idea.
6. Replace generic claims with one concrete, specific example
"Many people believe technology is harmful" is a Band 6 sentence. "A 2023 university study found that students who used smartphones during lectures scored 15% lower on recall tests" is a Band 8 sentence — even if you're paraphrasing an example rather than citing a real source. Specificity signals control of Coherence and Cohesion far more than complex vocabulary does.
7. Reserve the last two minutes for a targeted proofread
Don't reread for content — reread for three things only: verb tense consistency, article usage (a/an/the), and word count (aim for 260–290 words). This narrow checklist catches more real errors in two minutes than a vague "check everything" pass.

Band 8 essays aren't smarter — they're more disciplined. Fix your structure and your examples first; sophisticated vocabulary is the smallest lever in the whole system.
